Week 2

Welcome to Mt. Vernon Intermediate

Dear Students and Families,

We have had a great first full week back at school! It has been wonderful to see our students working together, making new friends, and learning our school routines and expectations. Learning is well underway, so please continue to make sure students are getting a good night’s rest each evening so they are ready to learn and make the most of each day.

We are so proud of our students and all they have accomplished during this first week. We are excited to see them continue to grow, learn, and make memories throughout the school year. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to make this a successful year for all of our students.

Sincerely,
Ms. Ashley Gustin
Principal

Body Safety Talks

Our school will be partnering with the Monique Burr Foundation to implement their comprehensive, research- based prevention program called MBF Child/Teen Safety Matters®. Students will participate in fun, engaging, and age and developmentally appropriate classroom lessons that educate and empower them to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to child abuse and digital dangers. A trained facilitator from Zoey's Place Child Advocacy Center will be implementing the program in classrooms on August 18th, 20th, and 25th. Parents will receive information and materials as students participate in the lessons. To learn more about the program, visit www.mbfpreventioneducation.org. Please contact your school counselor with questions and concerns.

When School Feels Hard: Understanding Anxiety and Avoidance in Kids

The start of a new school year brings excitement for some kids — and real dread for others. If your child is struggling with back-to-school school anxiety or avoidance, you’re not alone, and there are ways to help.

Join Cartwheel, our virtual mental health partner, and licensed therapist and author Chinwé Williams, LPC, for a free live webinar:

When School Feels Hard: Understanding Anxiety and Avoidance in Kids
Wednesday, August 19, 7–8pm ET

You’ll leave with a better understanding of what’s driving your child’s anxiety, when it may signal a need for additional support, and practical strategies to help them feel more confident, connected, and ready to learn this fall.

See the attached flyer for additional details.

Dismissal Reminder

For the safety of our students, we would like to remind families that we do not allow walk-up dismissal at the end of the school day. If you need to pick your student up early, the latest time to pick them up is 3:00 PM. After that time, students will need to be picked up through our car rider line.

We appreciate your cooperation and support in helping us maintain a safe and orderly dismissal process for all students.

Attendance Procedures & Reminders

If your student will be absent, please notify the school by 9:40 AM using one of the following methods:

Important Notes:

  • Absence documentation must be submitted within 3 days of the absence.
  • If the student is sick for 3 or more days, a doctor’s note is required for the absence to be excused.
  • For any doctor, dental, or other appointments, a provider’s excuse note is needed for the time missed to be excused.

Picking Students up Early
If your student needs to be picked up early, please notify the school ahead of time to ensure a smooth process:

Please include the following in your message:

  • Student’s name
  • Name of the person picking student up
  • Time of pickup
